A home battery stores electricity for later use. It is usually fitted alongside solar panels, although it can also work without them. Rather than allowing unused solar power to leave your home during the middle of the day, the battery holds it until your household needs it.

3. Reducing reliance on imported electricity

Every unit of electricity supplied by your battery is a unit you may not need to import from the grid. Over a year, those smaller reductions can make a noticeable difference, particularly for homes with consistent evening electricity use.

The financial benefit is usually greatest when the cost of buying electricity is much higher than the payment received for exporting solar. Export payments are still worthwhile, but using solar energy at home can often be more valuable than exporting it. A battery gives you the choice to use more of that energy later.

Solar panels and batteries can work independently, but they are often most effective together. Solar produces low-carbon electricity during daylight hours; the battery moves some of that value into the hours when your home needs it most.

A battery also gives homeowners more flexibility. You may choose to prioritise charging the battery from solar, export once it is full, or use a smart tariff strategy at certain times of year. The right approach is not identical for every property.

For a household considering an air source heat pump, an electric vehicle or increased electric cooking, battery storage can become even more relevant. These changes can raise electricity demand, so planning solar, storage and heating as one joined-up home energy system can be more effective than adding each element in isolation.

What affects the savings you can expect?

Battery storage can lower bills, but it is not a guaranteed fixed saving. A realistic estimate starts with how your household uses energy, not the capacity of the battery alone.

A family that is out during the day and uses more electricity in the evening may benefit strongly from storing solar. A home with high daytime demand may already use a large share of its solar generation as it is, so a battery could still help but may have less surplus power available to store.

Several factors influence the outcome:

  • The size and output of your solar panel system

  • Your battery capacity and usable storage

  • Your import tariff and export rate

  • Seasonal weather and winter electricity demand

The most dependable approach is to view a battery as part of a longer-term energy plan that improves control, comfort and efficiency, rather than expecting an instant fix for every bill.

Your installer should look at your current electricity use, solar generation if you already have it, roof potential, future plans and the tariff you use. They should also explain what the figures assume, rather than presenting savings as certain.
