A boiler that repeatedly loses pressure can turn a warm, comfortable home into a source of worry - particularly when the heating stops working on a cold South Coast morning. If you are asking, “is my boiler losing pressure?”, the short answer is that a small, occasional drop is not always a crisis. But a system that needs topping up regularly is telling you something needs attention.
Most modern sealed central heating systems work within a set pressure range. When that pressure falls too low, your boiler may shut down as a safety measure, leaving you without heating and sometimes hot water. The good news is that the cause is often identifiable. The important part is knowing which checks are safe to make yourself and when to arrange help from a qualified heating engineer.
What boiler pressure should be
Your boiler pressure is shown on a small dial or digital display, usually measured in bar. When the heating system is cold, most domestic boilers should sit at around 1 to 1.5 bar. Once the heating is on and the water warms up, it is normal for the reading to rise slightly, often towards 2 bar.
The exact recommended setting can vary by boiler make and model, so the manufacturer’s instructions remain the best reference. As a practical guide, a reading below 1 bar usually means the system needs repressurising. A reading close to or above 3 bar is too high and also needs investigating.
A one-off reduction in pressure can happen over time. Needing to refill the system every few weeks, or more often, is different. It can point to a leak, a faulty component or an issue with how the system is managing expansion as it heats and cools.
Is my boiler losing pressure because of a leak?
A water leak is one of the most common reasons for persistent pressure loss. It may be obvious, such as water beneath a radiator, but many leaks are slow and hidden. Pipework can run under floorboards, behind boxing or within walls, so there is not always a visible puddle to guide you.
Start with a calm visual check while the system is cool. Look around radiator valves, pipe joints, towel rails and the boiler itself for damp patches, corrosion, staining or tiny drips. Check underneath radiators too, especially around the valve connections. A small leak can leave a greenish or white residue as it dries.
Do not remove your boiler casing or attempt to repair internal parts. Boilers contain gas, electrical components and sealed combustion areas that must only be accessed by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you find a leak, turn off the heating if it is safe to do so, protect nearby flooring, and arrange a professional inspection.
Look at the pressure relief pipe outside
Most boilers have a copper pipe that runs through an outside wall and ends outdoors. This is the pressure relief pipe. It releases water if the system pressure gets too high, protecting your boiler and heating system.
If this pipe is dripping or there is regular water beneath it, the pressure relief valve may have opened. This can happen after the system has been over-pressurised, but it can also be a sign of a faulty expansion vessel or pressure relief valve. Once water has escaped, the system pressure drops and you may find yourself topping it up again.
Avoid blocking, capping or altering this pipe. It is a safety device, and it needs a qualified engineer to diagnose why it is discharging.
The expansion vessel may need attention
Inside a sealed heating system, the water expands as it heats up. The expansion vessel gives that extra volume somewhere to go, preventing pressure from rising excessively.
If the vessel loses its air charge or its internal diaphragm fails, the pressure can climb sharply while the heating is running. The pressure relief valve may then release water outside. When the system cools, the pressure reading can be very low, giving the impression that the boiler is continually losing pressure.
This fault is not one to diagnose by guesswork. An engineer can test the vessel, assess the wider system and recharge or replace the relevant component where appropriate. Repeatedly repressurising without resolving the underlying issue can make the cycle continue.
Could bleeding radiators cause a pressure drop?
Yes. When you bleed a radiator, you release trapped air and sometimes a little water. That reduces the volume of water in the sealed system, so the pressure gauge may fall afterwards.
This is usually straightforward to resolve by repressurising the boiler to the correct cold setting. However, if your radiators need bleeding often, there may be an underlying reason air is entering the system. It could be related to a small leak, ageing components or poor system water quality.
If you are comfortable bleeding radiators, do it with the heating switched off and the system cool. Use a cloth to catch any water, close the valve once water runs steadily, then check the boiler pressure before turning the heating back on. If you are unsure, a heating engineer can carry out the task as part of a service visit.
How to repressurise your boiler safely
Many modern boilers use a filling loop or filling key to let mains water back into the heating system. The correct method differs between manufacturers, so always follow the instructions for your specific boiler.
In general, repressurising should be done when the system is cool. Open the filling mechanism slowly, watch the pressure gauge, and stop once it reaches the recommended cold pressure - often around 1 to 1.5 bar. Close the valves or remove the key as directed, then check that no water is escaping from the filling loop.
Do not keep adding water as a long-term solution. Fresh mains water introduces oxygen and minerals into the system, which can contribute to corrosion and sludge over time. If the pressure drops again soon after topping up, it is time to investigate the cause rather than simply refill it.
If your boiler has no obvious filling loop, uses an unfamiliar digital process, or displays a fault code, do not force anything. A quick call to a qualified engineer is safer than risking over-pressurising the system or damaging a valve.
When low pressure is more urgent
A low-pressure boiler does not always require an emergency call-out, particularly if there are no leaks and you can safely restore the correct pressure. But some signs should not be ignored:
You can smell gas, feel unwell, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds. Leave the property, avoid switches or naked flames, and follow emergency gas safety advice immediately.
