Solar & Battery, Explained

Designed around your energy use,
not just your roof

Putting panels on a roof is the easy part. Designing a system that makes financial sense for the household underneath it takes a little more thought.

We look at how much electricity you use, when you use it and what your roof can realistically generate. Then we design the solar array and battery around those numbers.

The result is a system designed to help you buy less electricity from the grid and make better use of the energy your home generates.

Roof and shading survey

We check the orientation, pitch, available space and shading before sizing your system, so your expected generation is based on your actual roof.

Battery sized to your usage

A battery lets you save surplus solar energy and use it later, when your panels aren’t producing enough. We size yours around your household’s usage rather than simply fitting the biggest battery available.

Monitoring set up for you

See how much electricity your panels are generating, how much is going into your battery and how much your home is using. We set everything up and show you how it works before we leave.

The Whole-Home System

Solar, battery and heat pump,
designed as one system

Plenty of installers fit one of these. We design, install and look after all three, so your panels, battery and heating are planned together from the start rather than added by different companies years apart.

1

Solar panels

Generate electricity on your own roof during the day.

2

Battery storage

Store what you don’t use straight away and draw on it in the evening.

3

Heat pump

Heat your home and hot water, producing 3x or more heat for every unit of electricity it uses.

One survey, one design, one fixed quote and one team looking after it all afterwards.

Why Solar?

Make more of the energy
your home needs

Solar can reduce how much electricity you need to buy from the grid. Add a battery and you can store what you don’t use straight away, then use it later when your panels aren’t generating.

Buy less from the grid

Generate electricity on your own roof and use it to power your home during the day.

Store it for the evening

Save surplus solar in your battery, then use it after the sun goes down instead of buying as much electricity from the grid.

Charge up on cheap overnight rates

Top your battery up overnight when electricity costs least, then use it during expensive daytime hours. The savings don’t rely on export payments.

See it all from your phone

Track what your panels generate, what your battery stores, what your home uses and what you export, all from one app.

Electricity Usage Cost

A smarter way to buy electricity

Charge your home battery overnight when electricity costs least.

Use stored energy during expensive daytime hours.

Let solar power the home and top the battery back up during the day.

No export income required to make the numbers work.

Example only, not a quote. Standing charge excluded because it remains broadly the same before and after. Assumes about 2,000 kWh of the household’s demand is supplied by its own solar and the battery shifts around 85% of the rest to cheap overnight electricity, allowing roughly 90% battery round-trip efficiency.

98%of the electricity imported in one month was bought off peak
Real-World Example

In one month, 98% of the electricity imported by one of our solar-and-battery homes was purchased during the low-cost overnight period: 654.5 kWh off peak and 12.4 kWh peak.

The household paid just £21.55 for 666.8 kWh of electricity before standing charge and VAT.

Actual results vary by tariff, energy use, EV charging, solar generation and battery settings.
Which Setup?

Solar designed around your home,
from £7,500

Panels, battery or both. The right setup depends on your roof, when your household uses electricity and what you want the system to achieve.

We’ll survey your property, model the expected generation and recommend the setup that makes the most sense for your home.

Panels only

Generate your own electricity

A simple way to reduce the amount of electricity you buy from the grid, particularly if your household uses plenty of power during daylight hours. Anything you don’t use goes to the grid, so adding a battery lets you keep more of it for your own home.

Panels + battery

Keep more of the power you generate

Store surplus solar energy during the day and use it later when your household needs it. It means more of the electricity generated on your roof can be used in your home, including during the evening when your panels are producing little or no power.

Solar + heat pump

Power more of your home yourself

If you have, or are considering, a heat pump, solar and battery storage can help offset some of the electricity it uses. Gas Worx designs and installs both systems, so your solar, battery and heating can be planned together rather than treated as separate projects.

What will solar and battery cost?

Our solar and battery installations start from £7,500, with the final price depending on the system your home needs. The biggest factors are the number of panels and battery capacity, along with roof access, scaffolding and whether any electrical work is needed before installation.

If you’re combining solar with a heat pump, we can design and quote the whole project together. You’ll receive a fixed written quote before any work begins, so you know exactly what the system will cost.

Solar & Battery FAQs

The questions worth asking
before you install

How many solar panels will I need?

There isn’t one number that works for every home.

We look at your roof size, orientation and shading alongside how much electricity your household uses. From there, we can recommend the number of panels that makes sense and show you what we expect them to generate.

Do I need a battery?

No. Solar panels can work perfectly well without one.

A battery helps in two ways. It stores solar you can’t use straight away for later in the day, and it can charge overnight on a cheap off-peak tariff so you avoid buying electricity at expensive daytime rates.

Whether a battery is worth adding depends on your usage pattern, which is why we look at the numbers before recommending one.

Can solar work alongside a heat pump?

Yes, and the two can work particularly well together.

A heat pump increases your home’s electricity usage, while solar generates electricity at the property. Adding battery storage can also give you more flexibility over when that electricity is used.

Because Gas Worx installs both, we can design the heating and energy systems together and show you how they are expected to work as a whole.

Do you offer finance?

Yes. We’ve partnered with established credit brokers, Ideal4Finance, so you can spread the cost with monthly payments: 0% APR finance over 12 months, or 12.9% APR finance over 36, 48, 60 or 120 months, always subject to the lender’s assessment. A deposit might be payable, and we will agree this before you begin your application.*
